Have you always wondered how letters can be added to follow a particular path? Like those that are written around frames or flowing along an irregular edge. Here, you will learn how to add text in a circular path using GIMP.
Text in a Circular Path
Usually, text is added when an existing layout has already been created. It is important to know that when you are planning to add text to a round frame or element, make sure that the frame or element is opened as a layer above your background (as shown by the red arrows). Here, I have created a layout made of digital elements and paper from the Breath of Fall Kit from Digidesignresort.
You can increase each image by clicking on it so you can easily see all settings used.
I have chosen to follow one part (arc) of the path of this circular floral frame. To start, right-click on the layer of the frame, and click on “Add to Selection”. This will highlight the frame with dotted lines (as shown in the image).
Go to the “Select” tab and click on “Grow”.
A small window will appear. Increase the selection, I recommend 50 px.
A new dotted line will surround the round frame (as shown below). This will give you an idea where to put your path. The dotted line serves as a limitation, you must not come too close to it so that your text won’t coincide with the frame.
Click on the “Paths Tool”.
Start making a path using the frame as a basis. It’s okay if the arc is not perfect, you can adjust this later by clicking and dragging on the white circles.
When you are done creating your path, go to the “Path Dialog” at the right panel of GIMP (as shown by the red circle). You will see a layer that shows the arc path you have created. Click on the eye beside it (as shown by the red arrow) to hide the layer . You may now go back to the “Layers Palette”.
Click on the “Text” tool and configure the font and size that you want.
Create a text box and put the text you want. This will immediately open a new layer for text.
Right-click on the Text layer and click on “Text along Path”.
You will now see a draft of your text in the path you have created earlier.
Go to the Path Dialog and hide the new layer that shows your text in a circular path.
Go down below the Path Dialog and click on the “Path to Selection” icon, symbolized by a red square (as shown by the red arrow).
Go back to the Layers Palette and click on the eye beside the Text layer to hide it. Now, create a new layer and make sure that the Layer Fill Type is “Transparency”. Click OK.
This will now show your drafted text. Choose a color for your text by clicking on the BG icon (background color) which is under the icons of tools in the left of your GIMP window. Apply the color by pressing “Ctrl+.” (Control Plus Period).
Click on the “Select” tab, and choose “None” to remove any selection on your layout. You are now done with adding text that follows a circular path. You can apply the same steps for other shapes or paths you wish to follow.
